Nonnormal Effects in the Taylor–Couette Problem∗

چکیده
This work is devoted to the study of transient growth of perturbations in the Taylor–Couette problem due to linear nonnormal mechanisms. The study is carried out for a particular small gap case and is mostly focused on the linearly stable regime of counter-rotation. The exploration covers a wide range of inner and outer angular speeds as well as axial and azimuthal modes. Significant transient growth is found in the regime of stable counter-rotation. The numerical results are in agreement with former analyses based on energy methods and other independent numerical studies. The optimal energy transient growth factor appears to be consistent with experimental observations. This study might shed some light on the subcritical transition to turbulence which is found experimentally in Taylor–Couette flow when the cylinders rotate in opposite directions.

A study on the extraction of Acetaminophen (ACTP) which is also known as paracetamol, from aqueous solution by emulsion liquid membrane process using Taylor-Couette Column (TCC) was investigated. An ELM consists of three phase system which are the external, membrane and internal phases. The external phase containing the ACTP aqueous solution to be treated. Basically, the internal and membrane p...
متن کاملNonlinear Stability of Bifurcating Front Solutions for the Taylor- Couette Problem
We consider the Taylor-Couette problem in an infinitely extended cylindrical domain. There exist modulated front solutions which describe the spreading of the stable Taylor vortices into the region of the unstable Couette flow. These transient solutions have the form of a front-like envelope advancing in the laboratory frame and leaving behind the stationary, spatially periodic Taylor vortices....

متن کاملRotational stabilization of pinch instabilities in Taylor-Couette flow.
The axisymmetric linear stability of dissipative Taylor-Couette flow with an azimuthal magnetic field is considered. The magnetic field can be unstable without a rotation. This is the well-known pinch type instability. The stable rotation stabilizes the unstable azimuthal magnetic field. The dissipative flow stability can be classified according to Michael's stability condition for an ideal flo...
